"WATER CUBE" - NATIONAL AQUATICS CENTER “水立方”
Olympic arena. Beijing, China
The Beijing National Aquatics Center (traditional Chinese: 北京國家游泳中心; simplified Chinese: 北京国家游泳中心), also known as the Water Cube (水立方) or abbreviated [H2O]3, is an aquatics center that was built alongside Beijing National Stadium in the Olympic Green for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The Water Cube was initially designed by PTW Architects (an Australia Architectural company) , CSCEC International Design and Arup with structural Engineers Arup conceiving the structure. The structure was built by CSCEC (China State Construction Engineering Corporation). Comprising a steel space frame, it is the largest ETFE clad structure in the world with over 100,000 m² of ETFE pillows that are only eight one-thousandths of an inch in total thickness, The ETFE cladding allows more light and heat penetration than traditional glass, resulting in a 30% decrease in energy costs.
The outer wall is based on the Weaire-Phelan structure, a foam (structure formed by soap bubbles). The pattern is formed by taking a slice through the foam, and it was chosen in preference to the Kelvin foam because the more complex Weaire-Phelan structure results in more irregular, organic patterns than slices through the regular Kelvin foam.
The structure will have a capacity of 17,000 during the games that will be reduced to 6,000 afterwards. It also has a total land surface of 65,000 square metres and will cover a total of 7.8 acres (32,000 m²).
The Aquatics Center will host the Swimming, Diving and Synchronized Swimming events during the Olympics. The Water Polo was originally planned to be hosted in the venue but has been moved to the Ying Tung Natatorium.

BIRDS NEST AT NIGHT 鸟巢
I took this shot from the side of the expressway. There were many cars parked at the side of the road. Everyone was trying to get a good shot of both the stadium and the swimming centre. The bridges I took this photo from is the only good place to stand that will afford a clear view of the stadium. Everywhere else one is only greeted with large billboards and construction walls.
The police eventually came and got everyone to get back into their cars. Although as soon as they left, more people came by and parked at the side of the road.

ONE SMALL STEP
That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind
Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apollo program, and the third human voyage to the moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.
The mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's goal of "landing a man on the and returning him safely to the Earth" by the end of the 1960s.

HIGHER STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS
This is an older photograph taken with an older digital camera (5mpx). It's a Balinese dancer performing the Barong dance. Best viewed in large mode. They actually induce themselves into a trance-like state during the performance. I used focal zoom (again) during processing.

FLYING FISH
In some species the pelvic fins are unusually large, so the fish appears to have four wings. Most species reach a maximum length of 30 cm, though a few may be as long as 45 cm. Their eyes are relatively larger than those of other fish as well as flatter which improves visual acuity in the air. Flying fish live close to the water surface and feed on plankton.
